Hope in the Dark is an event designed to increase awareness and funding for two vital ministries: Blood:Water Mission and Show Hope. A brief summary of these ministries and links to their websites are below.
Blood:Water Mission
Marsabit, Kenya Project
Two of the primary causes of children being orphaned in Africa are contaminated water (leading to sickness and death) and the devastation caused by HIV/AIDS. If our charge from James 1:27 is to ‘care for orphans and widows in their distress’, it makes perfect sense to us that we should engage to help efforts to prevent more children from becoming orphans. This is no small task and the burden becomes...where can we make a difference? Through prayer and research, we are convinced that Blood:Water Mission is one of the organizations making a difference in
Africa on these fronts. Founded by the Christian band Jars of Clay in 2004, Blood:Water Mission focuses on holistic community development, education, advocacy and support. It is slow work...one small community at a time...but we wholeheartedly believe in their gospel-centered, relationship-based, community-driven model. It is our great privilege to join their efforts. Specifically, funds from Hope in the Dark will help fund Blood:Water Mission's project in Marsabit, Kenya.
This project includes two initiatives:
1) Water, Hygiene and Sanitation - Estimates are that only 44% of the population in Marsabit have access to clean water at some point in the year and 77% do not have access to toilet facilities. This program will impact over 100,000 in this desert region of northern Kenya, providing increased clean water access through implementation of water tanks, large community water projects and oasis conservation. Hygiene and sanitation programming will accompany each water point and latrines will be built in schools and public areas.
2) HIV/AIDS Care – tumaini clinic – Of the estimated 7,000 people in this region living with AIDS, only 360 of these are enrolled in treatment centers in the district. Marsabit possesses little in the way of reliable medical services and until the Tumaini Clinic opened, persons were required to travel 10+ hours on cattle trucks to Meru for treatment. Since the opening of the clinic in May 2009, this community has had access to integrated prevention, treatment and support programs. As stigma is reduced and treatment provided, families and communities are coming together, restoring dignity, health and hope in Marsabit.
Show Hope
Caring for the Orphan
Despite efforts to provide clean water and slow the spread of HIV/AIDS, there are still orphans. More than 15 million in sub-Saharan
Africa. An estimated 6 million in Ethiopiaalone. 147 million in the world. How can we make a dent in that? One child at a time.
There are numerous ways for God’s people to love and care for orphans but one of the most profound opportunities to do so is through adoption. It is our story. It is our passion. And we want to help others be able to experience this same INCREDIBLE God-story of adoption. The challenge is that adoption is very expensive. Very few families are able to write a check for the $20,000 to $30,000 that an average adoption costs. So many stay stuck...having a heart to adopt...but no funds to move forward. We know and have heard story after story of how God can and will provide the resources when He calls a family to adopt. Simply put...we want to be a part of those stories!!! What a privilege! Show Hope is an organization that is already doing this...caring for orphans by providing adoption grants...and doing it very well. We are excited to join their efforts.
Show Hope was founded in 2003 by Christian recording artist Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth Chapman after experiencing their own journey of caring for orphans through adoption. In addition to opening and maintaining a six-story medical care center for special needs orphans in China, Show Hope has provided over 2,000 grants to families adopting children from 40 different countries. Nevertheless, the need is great and many more families apply for grants than Show Hope is able to provide. Fundraisers like this will provide direct funding for more families to care for orphans through adoption. Proceeds from Hope in the Dark will specifically provide grants to those pursuing adoption from African countries.
